Happy Birthday, USA

I looked all over for the scene from The Sandlot, but had no luck.  Regardless, this is one of the best renditions of the song.

Songs Named After a Girl

I’m currently in Louisville, working on “Bellarmine Radio: Year Zero.” This is a complete and total relaunch of our station and music library. So on one of my low key evenings came across this episode of Family Guy. While I’m hardly the biggest fan of the show, I greatly appreciated the clip. Especially the latter 30 seconds.

RuPaul – Cover Girl Cast Version

Two of my roommates followed the debut season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Since you heard this song every episode, it’s hard not enjoying it at this point. Not to mention this version includes, winner, Bebe Zahara Benet’s rap.

Last night was Wednesday, which means a new episode of “The Unnamed Show with Alex, Eric and Natalie.”

We had a particularly good show last night. Plenty of new music, in particular a couple of cover songs. We highlighted some recent/upcoming shows – including a live recording from Rachael Yamagata’s performance last week at Hard Rock Cafe.

Eric, Natalie and I also discussed the new Social Activity App for Facebook, which allows you to share various top five lists with your friends.

Home Grown Greatness

Back in August I caught a little concert.  “An Evening with My Morning Jacket,” on the Louisville Waterfront.  This was one of the most incredible experiences of my music-loving  lifetime.

I stumbled upon this video last week, and it had me listening MMJ.

Just on the tails of this, I heard news of a wonderful release party at EarX-tacy (April 17) for a new live EP, Celebración De La Ciudad Natal.  All of the tracks were recorded during their visit in August, some during the in-store and some from the waterfront show.

Looking forward to the release, and the listening party.

Eyes Getting Heavy…

As you may have seen on our Bellarmine Radio Blog, we had a 24-Hour special this past Friday.  Most of our regular staff and DJs collectively spent 12pm Friday – 12pm Saturday in the booth.

We didn’t have any particular playlists, instead it seemed like highlights from each of our shows.  In honor of this, I’m reposting the playlist from my show (“The Unnamed Show with Alex, Eric and Natalie”) last week.

Natalie kicked us off w/ the first few picks, but I took over for the remainder.  With some requests sprinkled throughout:

Lily Allen- “Mr Blue Sky”
Sufjan Stevens- “Chicago [Acoustic]“
Phantom Planet- “California”
Mates of State- “Blue and Gold Print”
My Brightest Diamond- “Golden Star”

Dr. Dog- “100 Years”
Chemic- “Don’t Go Close”
Andrew Bird- “Not a Robot, Not a Ghost”

Sentimental Guy

One of my friends, and fellow Ben Folds fiends, posted this on facebook.  It’s from his gig from this past Friday, in Indy.  This being a great song, that he rarely plays… I figured I’d pass it along.  Enjoy.

Like a Dark, Gothic Neil Diamond

Well, it’s been awhile.  All of the deadlines leading up to midterms seemed to pile up and I haven’t been blogging.  I’ll avoid any other self-loathing excuses and get back to it.

I’ve got a small stockpile of records I’m in the process of going through, but I thought it would be fun to show you what I discovered last night.  “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” made it’s debut on HBO recently, and my roommates and I watched it last night.  While the film was not what I was expecting, its comedic use of music (some original compositions, some forgotten hits) accompanied  many of my favorite scenes.

Anytime “Nothing Compares 2 U” is featured in a film or television show it gets a giggle from me, this film was no exception (especially the Hawaiian cover, by the Coconutz).  But the blue ribbon goes to songs from Jason Segel’s original pieces, in particular “Dracula’s Lament,” from the Dracula Rock Opera. Something Segel had supposedly been thinking about doing previously…

My Favorite Grammys

As usual, the Grammys largely ignored many of the standout releases from the past year.  However, I did notice several bright spots among the winners.

If there had to be a Grammy powerhouse this year, I’m glad it was Allison Krauss and Robert Plant.  It was nice to see the industry celebrate an unorthodox collaboration, though after so much success… it’s difficult not thinking of them working together.

Some other highlights included George Carlin, who’s final effort won for Best Comedy Album, Bruce Springsteen (doing his best attempt at Phil Spector’s wall of sound) won Best Rock Song with “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” and Radiohead’s performance of “15 Steps” featuring USC’s Marching Band.

Though not surprising, I was disappointed The Dark Knight beat WALL•E  for Best Score.  However, my favorite track from WALL•E, “Define Dancing” won for Best Instrumental Arrangement – Thomas Newman did a fantastic job. Not to mention Peter Gabriel’s win for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture with “Down to Earth.”

It speaks volumes about the depth talent and creativity of Pixar, when the song used for their Ending Credits is one of the highlights of the year.  I can’t help but hope they’re rewarded come Oscar season.
